6th International Marxist Aesthetics Forum: “Creativity, Critique and Globalisation”

We are pleased to announce that the 6th International Marxist Aesthetics Forum: “Creativity, Critique and Globalisation” will be held at Cardiff University. The Forum is co-organized by the School of Media and International Culture, Zhejiang University, China; Beijing Normal-Cardiff Chinese College and the Centre for Ideology Critique and Žižek Studies at the School of Modern Languages, Cardiff University.

In today’s global landscape, “creativity” has assumed a central position in a variety of ways: as economic driver; as a socio-political factor; as a critical tool; and more generally as a cultural category through which we attempt to project ourselves in the future. Perhaps no other term captures more comprehensively the ontological condition of humanity today. The 6th International Marxist Aesthetics Forum will investigate the theoretical significance and practical implications of creativity in relation to eco-economic crisis and development, aesthetic theory and artistic practice, trans-cultural symbolic orders and performances, digital automation, and transformative design. Coming together at the intersection of these areas are key questions concerning the ambition, scope and directionality of creative human activity facing renewed and ever more pressing challenges of capitalist globalization, such as limits to economic growth, mass migration, war and terrorism, and not least climate change and environmental degradation. What does it mean to be creative today in the face of these challenges? Our conference seeks to explore this question and related issues from different discipline-specific and trans-disciplinary angles.
