International Seminar: Learning Music Through Play in Out-of-School Context

The team of researchers of the Université des jeux(nes) musiciens (Faculty of Music, Laval University, Quebec City, Canada) is organizing its first international seminar Learning Music Through Play in Out-of-School Context (LMusTP). This event will provide a space for creative thinking and discussion around the theory and practice of 21st century extracurricular music instrumental pedagogy. We will focus on what is needed to connect instrumental learners of all ages to the “world of play”. During three days (April 13 to 15, 2019), the seminar will provide opportunities for researchers, practitioners, students and game designers to share their valuable work, exploring its potential impact on learning music through play from three different perspectives: the player (day 1), i.e. the person who is learning music through educational games; the tool used to learn while playing (day 2), i.e. the learning game and the elements and mechanics to use and promote an in-depth musical learning; the network (day 3) of stakeholders who need to work effectively and collectively to promote and disseminate this pedagogical approach in the field.

Held in English to facilitate participation and exchange between people from different countries, this seminar is built around four questions:

What do we know about Learning Through Play?
What do we know about LMusTP?
What are the best examples of LMusTP?
What needs to be done during the next 5 years regarding LMusTP?

Each of these questions will be addressed under the three perspectives: player (day 1), educational game (day 2), network (day 3).

The three keynote presentations will be made by:
Dr. Jennifer Zosh, Penn State University, USA, researcher for LEGO Foundation
Dr. Fares Kayali, University of Vienna, Austria
Charlotte Wieder, ex-manager of PlayFutures™ (LEGO Foundation), Denmark

The seminar will also include several other spoken papers, workshops, educational music games activities, posters and round tables on targeted issues with the aim of collectively identifying the most urgent actions to put in place over the next five years in the field of LMusTP.
