Entrepreneurship in a Globalized World Congress 2023

Entrepreneurship in a Globalized World Congress 2023 will be a hybrid peer-reviewed international event organized in Istanbul and online from 4 to 6 May 2023 by Istanbul Topkapı University (Topkapı), in collaboration with American University in the Emirates (AUE). The main language of the congress is English, but there will also be sessions in Turkish. Sessions will be held in person and online via Zoom/Teams.

This congress is warranted as we move towards a post-Pandemic state. The Covid-19 crisis, with all the horrors it has caused, also offers an opportunity to reflect and reinvent. At some point, international travel was completely halted, and a logistics crisis unfolded as if it would never return to “normal.” The impact on enterprises and entrepreneurs, especially those connected across borders was immense. Similar to previous major crises, the Pandemic caused substantial decrease in the number of newly registered companies while also reducing innovation as access to and availability of funds were curbed as reported by a recent World Bank report (2022). It was also apparent that developing countries were affected worse than countries with relatively better wealth and resources. At the same time, the Pandemic was an opportunity to showcase the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation as Wyskiel, Director of Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures, put it: “The essence of entrepreneurship is identifying an unmet need and moving as fast as possible to get a meaningful product to market. This is exactly what society needs during crisis situations like the COVID-19 pandemic.” Beyond the pandemic, we have seen similar trends raising similar questions during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and, in a more regional level perhaps, the Ukraine conflict is asking comparable questions to entrepreneurship and innovation. Alongside such acute impacts, crises also inflict longer-term adverse impact on economies which often result in a decline in earnings and job creation. Then again, entrepreneurship rises as one of the strategic options to this end.

With this congress, we would like to offer a venue for debates and studies on the particular relationship between crises and entrepreneurship and innovation. You may find below a non-exhaustive list of topics:
